Buy Groceries / Support Altrusa!
Our local Kroger family supermarket, City Market, has been offering donations to Altrusa of Montrose CO Foundation (or the charity of your choice) for a number of years based on purchases by customers with the City Market or King Soopers loyalty card. Recently, we learned that they are revamping the sign-up method for customers to designate a charity to receive donation.
Here's the scoop.
If you would like a percentage of your grocery purchases to be donated by City Market / Kroger to Altrusa of Montrose CO -- even if you previously signed up to do so -- you'll need to visit the City Market website and sign up again.
Start by visiting the Community Rewards page.
If you already have a City Market online account, SIGN IN. Otherwise, create a new account (REGISTER).
Once you've created and/or signed in to your account, you can ENROLL NOW to have City Market donate a percentage of your purchases to Altrusa.
If you haven't yet set up your Value Card number on your City Market account, you can do that next. You'll need to enter the number from your physical card (or your alternate ID number) on the screen shown to the left. Associating your City Market Value Card with your online City Market account will also result in being eligible to receive coupons for products you already purchase!
Are you still with us? Last step!
Under "Community Rewards" search for Altrusa Montrose, or just search for our organization number, 10199.
When you click SEARCH, you should see
Altrusa International Montrose Fnd
That's us.
Click ENROLL and you're finished.
Thank you for supporting Altrusa of Montrose CO Foundation by asking City Market to donate to us whenever you shop with your City Market card.

Recent Grants by Altrusa of Montrose
Recently, Altrusa 2nd Vice President (and Service Committee Chair) Ginny Spaven presented grant funding to two organizations providing needed services in our community.
Altrusa donated $200 to the Eating Disorder Support Group for positive body image materials to be part of their program being incorporated into the Montrose County School District. Ginny is presenting a check to Robin Berndt, who is showing one of the books purchased for the program.
Altrusa also donated $1,000 to All Points Transit, which recently began bus service in Montrose. The funds will be used toward registration fees for the new mass transit vehicles, including a para-transport vehicle. Ginny is shown presenting a check to Darcy Arnold, Mobility Manager for All Points Transit.

2009 Holiday Festival raises needed funds
With the funds raised, along with funding from our Foundation's reserves, Altrusa of Montrose hopes to provide services, grants, and scholarships totaling over $41,000, primarily to our local community. Since our fiscal year began in June 2009, Altrusa has already funded additional units for Lifeline (helping seniors live safely in their own homes), purchased stuffed toys (Love Hug Bears given to children having surgery or emergency care at MMH), helped fund the expansion of Christ's Kitchen (helping to feed members of our community), and provided grants to organizations such as Bosom Buddies, Dreamcatcher Therapy, Hospice, Montrose Community Dinners (Thanksgiving dinner), San Juan Health Care, and Youth Appreciation Day.
If you missed this fundraiser, or simply would like to help Altrusa fund scholarships and projects such as the ones mentioned above, please consider making a donation to Altrusa Club of Montrose CO Foundation -- a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. To make it easy, you can use the SECURE Donate button above to donate $25.00, or any other amount you care to give.
Altrusa is very grateful to all the organizations, businesses, and individuals whose generous donations and contributions made this fundraiser successful. Montrose is a wonderful community, and our Montrose Club is proud of what we've been able to give back to our neighbors and our region.
2009 Holiday Festival coming soon
Altrusa's annual fundraising event, the Holiday Festival & Gifts event, will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009 at Wells Fargo Bank downtown from 6:15 - 8:15 pm. This year, a $10 per person donation at the door includes an extensive appetizer selection, desserts, beverages (including wine and beer), and a souvenir wine or beer glass to take home.
A wide assortment of decorated trees, wreaths, centerpieces, and a variety of gift baskets suitable for all occasions will be on display in the lobby of the bank starting Monday, November 16 from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm daily. Everyone in our community is encouraged to stop by the bank to view and bid on these silent auction items. The silent auction will end on Friday, November 20 at the conclusion of the evening event.
Altrusa Club of Montrose CO Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation, relies on funds raised at this event to enable the club to fund local area scholarships and grants for other charitable organizations, as well as our numerous other service projects. These include Lifeline (with over 100 units in local homes), Love Hug Bears (stuffed animals for children at MMH), Buddy Bags (tote bags filled with books and items for children), Tender Touch Turbans (for cancer patients), Pennies for Peace (raising funds to build schools in remote villages in the Himalaya), Kids on Wheels (promoting bike usage & safety), and many more projects.

Altrusa donation to help feed our community
Altrusa International of Montrose has pledged a donation of $10,000 to help the Mexican American Development Association (MADA) and Christ’s Kitchen add an addition to their existing building to enable them to feed more people and store more food donations. The club hopes that their support will spur other organizations and individuals in our community to donate to the building fund so that additional dining space can be used to serve the increasing numbers of people who need a nutritious meal.
Christ’s Kitchen currently serves a free hot lunch to approximately 100 people per weekday, but the demand can often be much higher. For some, this lunch may be their only meal of the day.
The building expansion project is expected to cost $50,000, and construction will begin when all the funds are raised.
Building a strong Foundation
The role of Altrusa Club of Montrose, CO Foundation was displayed in a memorable manner by members of its Board of Directors at our club's meeting on October 7. Service Committee Chair, Diane Winger, arrived lamenting the lack of tools in her toolbelt. Without them, she couldn't figure out how to fund requests from our committees to enable them to operate their many service projects, and for Altrusa to provide scholarships and give grants to local organizations.Other Foundation directors came to the rescue, bringing fundraising projects providing construction tools that let them literally build a "foundation" with 2 x 4's and nails. The Service Committee now had something to "build" upon!
But wait! A building inspector now arrived, questioning whether the building crew had a valid building permit. Foundation President Becky Wolford came to the rescue, presenting our Foundation's 501(c)3 status, proving that we are a bona-fide non-profit organization! All this was accompanied by a song (to the tune of "If I had a hammer"):
If we had the Funding (Altrusa Foundation song)
(Service Committee Chair arrives at construction site with no “tools”, and laments…)
If we had the funding
We’d donate the money
We’d help out with projects
All over this land…
We’d donate to scholars,
We’d celebrate reading
We’d help out with schools and clubs
And community programs
All over this land.
(Foundation construction workers give her tools of funding from Altrusa Foundation…)
Now Altrusa Foundation
Has funded our projects
We can help out our neighbors
All over this land…
Lifeline and Readings
Love Hugs and Buddy Bags
We are building schools
And bringing hope
All over this world.
Club 21 helps children with HIV/AIDS
Past President Becky Wolford spoke to our club this week about Altrusa International Foundation's program, Club 21. Club 21 was established in 1997 to support children infected with HIV and AIDS. With an annual donation of $21, Club 21 members enable children to attend Camp Safe Haven.Camp Safe Haven gives these children, who are often stigmatized and cast out from schools and sport teams, a place where they can have a sense of belonging and acceptance. Camp Safe Haven volunteers -- doctors, nurses, social workers, counselors, and others -- offer support, not only during the camp sessions, but throughout the year.
Club 21 also sponsors the Ghana Health Education Initiative providing vital health information to that high-risk population.
At Tuesday's meeting, an additional 9 Altrusa members plus one guest joined Club 21 and received their Club 21 pins on the spot. Anyone can join Club 21; you do not need to be a member of Altrusa. To join, contact Becky with your $21 donation, or download the Club 21 membership form from this web page.
