Altrusa provides scholarships to area students

Altrusa members honored this year's scholarship recipients and their families at a meeting on May 12, 2015. Five local students were selected to receive scholarships of $1,000 each.

Cheyenne Foster will be attending the Delta/Montrose Technical College studying early childhood education. Zane White from Olathe High School will attend the University of Alaska at Fairbanks studying fire science. Brenna Gaber from Montrose High School will attend Fort Lewis College.  She was planning to study agriculture business but that major is no longer offered, so she has selected a double major to approximate the same overall studies. Marisa Jahnke from Montrose High School will attend Colorado Mesa University studying counseling psychology and art education. Theresa Tafoya from Olathe High School will attend Regis University studying biology with a medical focus.

The scholarship review committee was extremely impressed with these five candidates and our entire Altrusa club wishes each of them great success in their future studies.

Altrusa International of Montrose recently awarded academic scholarships to 5 students who will be attending various colleges and universities throughout the U.S.

On Tuesday, June 8, 2010, Altrusa International of Montrose awarded five college scholarships of $1,000 each to the following applicants for the 2010-2011 school year:

Ashlee Gerlach will major in Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Music (piano) at Brigham Young University. Ashlee graduated from Montrose High School, May 2010.

Nikki Rodgers will major in biology with further study in veterinary science at Colorado State University. Nikki graduated from Montrose High School, May 2010.

Dylan Markley will major in wildlife biology at Colorado State University. Dylan graduated from Olathe High School, May 2010.

Jessica Yarnell attends Delta/Montrose Technical College studying practical nursing with a goal to earn her LPN and RN in the future.

Rick L. LaPena attends Mesa State College, Montrose Campus studying liberal arts focusing on humanities and social science with a goal to become an elementary teacher.

Altrusa awards scholarships

Altrusa of Montrose established a scholarship program 25 years ago, rewarding scholarships to outstanding students.

This year, seven scholarships were awarded to the following students for 2009-2010:

• Clancy Garoutte, Mesa State College, Grand Junction Campus.
• Matthew Smelser, University of Colorado, Biology and Pre-Med, Business Administration & Radiology.
• Andrea Flowers, Mesa State College, Montrose Campus.
• Megan Flanary, Colorado State University, Biological Science and Performing Arts.
• Emily Capshaw, Baylor University, Theater Performance (hopes to teach at MHS).
• Melissa Smith, Mesa State College, Montrose Campus, Elementary Education.
• Brenda Capp, Delta-Montrose Technical College, LPN Mechanical Engineering.

Altrusa awards over $25,000 in scholarships & grants

The Montrose Altrusa Club returned over $25,000 to the community during the 2007-2008 club year, including $7,300 in scholarships.

Scholarship recipients from Montrose High School are:

Hanna Guenther, $1,000. A daughter of Judy Guenther of Montrose, and Dave Guenther of Santa Barbara, CA, she will attend Colorado State University, majoring in psychology.
Kyle Masterson, $1,000. Son of Jerry and Diane Masterson, Montrose, he has been accepted at Oregon State University where he will major in mechanical engineering.
Michelle Deneen, $500. Michelle plans to major in pediatric physical therapy at Pepperdine University. Her parents are Mike and Jean Deneen, Montrose.
Alyssa Michelle Volk, $500. A daughter of Kim and Bill Volk, Montrose, she will attend the Colorado School of Mines, studying development and manufacture of pharmaceutical drugs or surgical specialties.

Olathe High School scholarship recipients are:

Paige Renee Markley, $1,000. She plans to attend the University of Northern Colorado to pursue a degree in nursing or sports medicine. Her parents are Brad and Lisa Markley of Olathe.
Emerson Allen Lamm, $500. Emerson, a son of Bob and Nancy Lamm of Olathe, has been accepted at the University of Colorado at Boulder where he will major in English, with a career goal of law enforcement work.

The $800 Margaret L. Goodhue Scholarship has been awarded to Joya L’Ecuyer. An Olathe High School graduate, she is a daughter of Raymond L’Ecuyer, New York City, and Shelly Hubbard, Montrose. She will attend the University of Northern Colorado, majoring in elementary education.

Kristi Casias of Montrose was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to the Delta Montrose Technical College where she will study to become a licensed practical nurse.

The $1,000 Connie McIntire Scholarship to Mesa State College, Montrose Campus, was presented to Olathe High KaCee Jo Harper, daughter of Dale and Donna Harper of Olathe. She will pursue a degree in elementary education.

Other donations by Altrusa included $4,385 to Lifeline, a system by which persons living alone can call for help if required; $2,058 to literacy projects, including tote bags containing books, etc., to the Tri-County Resource Center, awards to Teachers of the Month, and funds to the RE-1J Adult Basic Education program; $2,500 to the San Juan Cancer Center; and $2,600 to Love Hug Bears for children having surgery or emergency treatment at Montrose Memorial Hospital and for children involved with Hospice.

The club also donated $500 each to the 21st Century After School Program, Bosom Buddies, Black Canyon Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, and the RE-1J New Me curriculum. $250 each went to Monte de Rosas Fiesta, Montrose Community Dinners and the Pregnancy Center of Montrose.

Other grants were $230 for history books at Northside School; $320 to the Montrose Meth Coalition; $150 to Passage Charter School; Youth Appreciation Day, $200; Fore-Kin Genealogical Society, $200; and Montrose and Olathe High School graduation parties, $400.

2008 Scholarships available

Scholarship applications from students pursuing an Associate's or Bachelor's degree are now being accepted. Altrusa of Montrose Foundation awarded scholarships to 13 students in 2007.

These scholarships are made possible by the community’s continued support of Altrusa’s fundraising events such as the Spring Luncheon, Holiday Festival, and Golf Tournament, and through contributions to the Foundation.

Scholarship Recipients honored

Montrose Altrusa scholarship recipients were honored at the July 10 meeting with a Meet and Great pizza luncheon. The recipients who attended shared their educational goals with the membership as well as their appreciation for the financial support the scholarships will provide.
